Description
There is not a whole lot of info available about the Malawa Shrimp from Sulawesi as of yet and it is very new to the USA having been collected, imported to Germany and introduced to the USA in 2008 by Mustafa Ucozler and this shrimp has just recently been offered to other hobbyists as well. This shrimp is from Southern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Malawa spring near Bowonglangi and I received my stock directly from Mustafa at Petshrimp.com and these shrimp are not seen for sale in the USA very often at all being so new to the hobby at this time. What attracted me to the Malawa Shrimp was the beautiful light bluish pigment as adults as well as the light blue eggs I saw in photos of these animals, but I have since learned that they can have a wide variety of different colors depending on environment. So far I have some showing Blueish tint as well as red, but these are still young shrimp. I will know more and add info as I successfully raise and breed these shrimp, but have had them just over 2 months as of late November 2008 and have much to learn about these shrimp before I can share more detailed information. An interesting thing about this shrimp is that they seem much less shy than many other species and are always active and even spend some time lazily swimming around the tank throughout the day. I am currently keeping these shrimp in a 10 gallon tank with a sponge filter only. The substrate is a fluorite and black gravel mix with some lava rock as well as leaves and a couple bunches of moss. I also do a weekly 10% water change to help keep the water as clean as possible without upsetting stability or interupting the natural bio filtration. I have learned that with ant species of freshwater dwarf shrimp to much water change can be as detrimental as too little with stability of the environment being the key.
